Making Thackray Medical Museum fit for the 21st century
£4m museum redevelopment to start in May 2019
From 1st May 2019, the museum galleries, café and gift shop will temporarily close as we begin our £4m redevelopment, bringing you brand new and updated exhibitions and improved facilities.
More than 20 years after the museum first opened, this is a fantastic opportunity to improve our most popular exhibitions to make them even better, and to create brand new displays, bringing the museum up to date, telling new stories of medical innovation and healthcare while allowing us to show even more of our fabulous collection. Improvements to visitor facilities and the entrance hall will enhance the visitor experience and further showcase the architecture of our wonderful grade II listed building.
The job of any museum is to ignite the imaginations of the next generation with the ideas and inspiration to build a better future. Nowhere is this more important than when it comes to our health. With our Healthy Future project we are helping to ensure that the future for all of us is in safe hands. Nat Edwards, CEO Thackray Medical Museum
During this temporary closure, we will be heading out on the road in our Emergency Museum, delivering fun activities at local festivals and events – watch this space to find out more.
The best way to keep up to date with all our news is to join our mailing list or keep an eye on social media.
Please note that the museum conference centre and pay and display car park will be OPEN throughout this temporary closure.
The project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Wellcome Trust, Thackray Medical Research Trust, Wolfson Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Foyle Foundation, Leeds Inspired part of Leeds City Council, Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity and others.
