Volunteering Opportunities

Can you spare a few hours a week or a month to help visitors get the most out of the museum?

We are looking to expand our fabulous volunteer team. This is great opportunity to meet like-minded people, to develop your skills, and to engage with museum visitors to ensure they get the most out of their trip. There are two roles to choose from: Gallery and Events Assistant or Museum Activity Volunteer.

As a Gallery and Events Assistant, your key tasks would involve patrolling the galleries to engage with visitors about the displays and collections, encouraging visitors to use interactive displays, signposting events, activities and services, assisting with cleanliness of the public spaces and assisting with safety procedures.

As a Museum Activity Volunteer you would be helping with family activities which take place at weekends or during school holidays.  With constantly changing themes there is always something different to take part in. You may find yourself helping with forensic activities for example, helping at dissection events or even welcoming therapy ponies to the museum.  We particularly welcome volunteers with skills in arts and crafts or science, or with experience with children, however the role is open to everyone.

All volunteers also have the opportunity to help man stalls at events off-site. This could include events such as The Great Yorkshire Show, Kirkstall Festival, or Harehills Festival.

Our volunteers are a friendly and welcoming group, and a key part of the museum team. The number of events you attend or the number of hours you volunteer a week is completely up to you. If you would like to know more, please get in touch and we will arrange for you to come in for an informal chat.
